UN member states are united in efforts to fight corruption

The representatives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) took part in the ninth session of the Monitoring Group on the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption. The event took place on November 12-14, 2018, in Vienna with participations of representatives from more than 180 countries. The participants of the session reviewed the successful practices of implementing the provisions of the Convention; the difficulties encountered by the countries, and expressed the needs for technical assistance. The information was collected because of the monitoring of 41 countries for the implementation of chapters III (Criminalization and law enforcement) and IV (International Cooperation) of the Convention within the framework of the first assessment cycle.

Indictment as of the judge of the Commercial Court of Sumy Region was sent to court

On November 13, 2018, the Detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) jointly with the prosecutors of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor`s Office drawn up an indictment and then sent it to court. It was according to the results of the pre-trial investigation of the criminal proceedings as of the facts of demanding and attempt to receive 26.6 thousands USD of improper advantage by the judge of the Commercial Court of Sumy Region, On July 26, 2018, the defence was granted with access to the materials of the criminal proceeding for review.

Johannes Hahn stressed on the necessity to start work of the Anti-Сorruption Court as soon as possible

A full start of the work of the High Anti-Corruption Court will be able to provide fair judgments in cases as of corruption crimes, pre-trial investigation of which conducted by the Detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU). The Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn stressed it at the press briefing with the participation of the NABU Director Artem Sytnyk on November 9, 2018, in Kyiv.

Results of the NABU’s and the SAPO’s work in October: 730 proceeding are under investigation

As of October 31, 2018, the Detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine under the procedural guidance of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) investigate 730 criminal proceedings. 276 persons are accused of committing criminal corruption offences within 166 cases, which were sent to court.

E-declarations: investigation as of the Minister of Infrastructure was completed

The Detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) under the procedural guidance of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) completed the pre-trial investigation as of the facts of illegal enrichment and failure to declare income by the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine. On November 6, 2018, the defense had been granted with access to the documents of the pre-trial investigation.

10 persons were given notices of suspicion for 20 million USD embezzlement of the «State Savings Bank of Ukraine»

On October 23, 2018, the Detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) under the procedural guidance of the prosecutors of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) detained and gave notices of suspicion to 10 persons for 20 million USD embezzlement of the Public Joint-Stock Company (PJSC) «State Savings Bank of Ukraine» (100% state-owned).

USA committed to continue support of the Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies — United States Assistant Secretary of State

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) Detectives and the Prosecutors of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) investigate resonant corruption crimes committed by top-officials. The United States of America supports their efforts by understanding how difficult it is to work under conditions of possible pressure and criticism. This what the United States Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Kirsten D. Madison emphasized at the briefing on October 19, 2018.

International partners support the NABU in its fight against corruption

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) continues expand the range of strategic partners at the international level. The outcome of the fight against top-level corruption depends on a large extent on the effective interaction of the competent authorities of different countries. This was emphasized by the NABU Director Artem Sytnyk at the international conference "Strengthening transparency and accountability to ensure integrity: united against corruption". The event was held on October 15-16, 2018, in the Republic of Croatia.

Amendments proposed to the CPC of Ukraine threaten independence of the NABU and the SAPO and block their work

Adoption of amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, envisaged by the draft law No. 8336, eliminates disadvantages of the so-called "Lozovyi's amendments" regarding the appointment of expert assessments in virtually all proceedings, except those investigated by the Detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU). In addition, the proposed initiatives can threaten the independence of the NABU and complicate the investigation of top-corruption crimes.

«Krayan Plant case»: the indictment was sent to court

On October 5, 2018, the indictment as of 8 persons (including Odesa City Mayor) was sent to Malynovsky District Court of Odesa. These persons are accused of embezzlement of 185 million UAH from Odesa Сity budget during purchasing of the buildings of the Open Joint Stock Company (OJSC) «Holding Company «Krayan».

Despite the pressure NABU will continue attack on top-level corruption — Artem Sytnyk

The Detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) continue to expose corruption schemes without regard to their positions and political expediency, despite increasing attempts to influence the activities of the institution. This was emphasized by the NABU Director Artem Sytnyk on October 3, 2018, at the meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Corruption Prevention and Counteraction.
