INTERVIEW: Ukraine’s anti-graft chief vows to probe senior law enforcement officials despite resistance

“Corruption-related cases that involve senior officials of the Prosecutor General’s Office are in our investigative jurisdiction, and we will keep investigating these cases. Whatever incidents may arise, they can’t affect our position,” Artem Sytnyk, head of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), tells bne IntelliNews in an exclusive interview in his Kyiv office.

NABU exposed Kyiv university chancellor on taking 3 million UAH bribe

The Detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine under the procedural guidance of the Anti-Corruption prosecutors and in cooperation with the Chief Department for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime of the Security Service of Ukraine in Kyiv and region exposed and took into custody the Acting Chancellor of the National Aviation University for taking an improper advantage (bribe).

NABU returned 34 million UAH to a state enterprise

The investigations of the proceedings on 50 million UAH embezzlement of funds of PJSC "State Food and Grain Corporation of Ukraine”, conducted by the NABU detectives, resulted into 34 million UAH returned to the accounts of the Corporation.

"The NABU’s task is not only to expose the crime but also to bring the guilty ones to justice, eliminate the corruption schemes and return the stolen funds to the state. Over the past few months of the NABU’s work, 69 million UAH have  already been returned to the state budget," the NABU Director Artem Sytnyk said.

Artem Sytnyk: We will stand our ground, if the public supports us

The Director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau Artem Sytnyk asks not to consider the recent events between the officers of the NABU and the General Prosecutor’s Office as an interagency war. According to him, both bodies must "jointly fight corruption, which appears to be the main evil that prevents Ukraine from development." Official Statement regarding incident between NABU and GPO employees on August 12

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has faced the first open unlawful confront of the other law enforcement bodies of Ukraine, being under Bureau’s investigation. In particular, on August 12 two officers of the NABU Operative and Technical Department, while being on duty, were illegally detained for 11 hours by the General Prosecutors Office (GPO) staff (Department of investigation of high-profile economic cases).

NABU first Territorial Office opens in Lviv

On August 12, 2016, the Lviv Territorial Office of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine officially started its work. Besides Lviv region, it will also work in Volyn, Zakarpattia, Chernivtsi, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne and Khmelnytsky region.

FBI conducted a training for the NABU special forces

Instructors from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted a 10-days training course “Special weapon and tactics in high risk operations” for the NABU special forces. The close-up meeting, held on June 22 at the NABU, was attended by the representatives of the Law Enforcement Affairs Section of the US Embassy Kyiv, FBI instructors and the NABU top management.

Onyhchenko gas case: General Prosecutor signed the notice of suspicion

On June 27 the General Prosecutor of Ukraine sighed the notice of suspicion against the Deputy of Ukraine Oleksandr Onishchenko who is considered to be the organizer of the corruption scheme of large scale state funds embezzlement while gas production and realization jointly with the PJSC “Ukrgasvydobuvannia”.
