Independence of anti-corruption institutions is crucial for Ukraine’s EU accession – European Commissioner

This was emphasized at the meeting in Kyiv between NABU Director Semen Kryvonos, SAPO Head Oleksandr Klymenko, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, and the Minister for European Affairs of Denmark Marie Bjerre.

“Ukraine’s path to the European Union rests on robust rule of law. A strong Ukraine needs strong and independent anti-corruption institutions. They are the backbone of any democracy that delivers for its citizens,” said Marta Kos.

The parties discussed support for the independence of anti-corruption institutions, their role in strengthening the rule of law, and Ukraine’s progress on the path to European integration.

“Ukraine has come a long way under the most difficult of circumstances. There is no alternative to the path of reform if you want to become a member of the European Union. Rule of law and the fight against corruption is among the most fundamental building blocks of a democratic society. The anti-corruption institutions of Ukraine and their staff are working tirelessly every day on making their contribution to Ukraine’s future as a member of the EU,” said Marie Bjerre.

“Anti-corruption infrastructure is the foundation of trust for both citizens and international partners. The independence of NABU and SAPO is a key precondition for Ukraine’s further progress toward the EU,” said Semen Kryvonos.
