Corruption in medical procurement: Zaporizhzhia Regional Council top officials notified of suspicion

On 20 Feb. 2023, NABU and SAPO notified the Deputy Head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Council, his assistant and a deputy of the said council of suspicion of giving undue advantage to an official of a municipal medical institution.

According to the investigation, during 2023-2024, the suspects repeatedly offered money to one of the directors of the regional hospital for assistance in winning tenders by predetermined businesses, as well as for the opening of an account in a chosen bank and depositing funds there.

On 19 February, the suspects were exposed upon giving part of the bribe. The total amount of the undue advantage exceeds UAH 650,000.

The suspects' actions fall under:

  • the Deputy Head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Council - Part 3 Art. 27 and Part 4 Art. 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine;
  • his assistant - Part 5 Art. 27 and Part 4 Art. 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine;
  • a deputy of the said regional council - Part 4 Art. 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered not-guilty in the commission of a crime and cannot be subject to criminal punishment until he or she is found guilty by court.
