The NABU took into custody three prosecutors in the wake of special operation in Ternopil region
On May 12 the National Anti-Corruption Bureau detectives took into custody three staff workers of the Ternopil regional prosecutor's office suspected in receiving improper advantage in the amount of more than 300 thousand UAH (Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Two of them (the head of the local prosecutor`s office and one of the heads of the regional prosecutor`s office) have received a notice of suspicion. The preventive measures have also been already chosen. The first detainee has got placing into custody with an alternative of 507 thousand UAH pledge, the latter has been put under house arrest.
The third suspect, who had fled from prosecution, was taken into custody in Ternopil in accordance with the article 208 of the Criminal procedural code of Ukraine. So far the special anti-corruption prosecutors have made a procedural request for choosing him a preventive measure.
Thus, as a result of the special operation in Ternopil region the NABU detectives have taken into custody four members of the prosecutor`s office, two heads of investigative units of the National Police of Ukraine and a lawyer – mediator
“The success of the special operation in Ternopil was achieved thanks to the comprehensive investigation held by the NABU detectives, clear strategy and concerted efforts of all participants. At the same time we understand that there is a lot of work to be done, because schemes similar to Ternopil’s case work in all Ukrainian regions. Members of different law enforcement bodies are involved in them, but the prosecutor offices play a leading part in such schemes because of their procedural status. Therefore, I strongly believe that we need two parallel processes – the NABU’s work on exposing and bringing bribetakers to justice and a systematic and profound reform of the prosecutor’s office,” – emphasized the Bureau`s Director Artem Sytnyk.
It should be reminded that in late February 2016 the NABU detectives along with specialists of the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police of Ukraine held a special operation during which more than 40 searches were conducted.
The procedural actions were held while investigating more than 300 thousand UAH bribe solicitation from a Ternopil citizen, requesting to close a criminal proceeding against her. In the early March a notice of suspicion was given to two heads of investigative units of National Police in Ternopil region, one of the heads of the local prosecutor`s office and a lawyer.
