NABU, SAPO work brings over UAH 1.67 billion of economic effect in 2023 first half-year
The economic effect brought by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office work in the first six months of 2023 makes UAH 1.678 billion. This includes funds directed to support the military, assets reimbursed to state-owned enterprises, prevented embezzlement, and forfeited property.
From the first days of russia's full-scale invasion, one of the main directions of anti-corruption bodies' activities has been to find financial resources to strengthen the country's defense capability.
Thanks to NABU and SAPO, in the first six months of 2023, the Armed Forces received over UAH 662 million. These are assets seized/voluntarily forfeited within NABU and SAPO's criminal proceedings, as well as pledges withdrawn by HACC's order.
The above amount includes USD 785,000 and UAH 650,000 seized from a former MP and directed to the army needs. Meanwhile, a foreign citizen who was found guilty of trying to bribe the head of the State Service of Ukraine on Medicines and Drug Control pledged to donate UAH 10 million to the UNITED24 fundraising platform for the “Army of Drones” project.
Besides the support of the military, the economic effect also includes funds and property reimbursed to state-owned enterprises.
In the first half of 2023, the amount of such compensation reached almost UAH 1 billion. In particular, private companies returned more than UAH 883 million to Ukrnafta PJSC, and an additional UAH 2 million in losses was reimbursed to Ukrzaliznytsia JSC.
Furthermore, the materials collected by NABU detectives helped prevent the embezzlement of almost UAH 70.5 million even at the stage of the pre-trial investigation.
During 2023, a series of convictions involving the confiscation of property became legally effective. This included both funds and real estate worth more than UAH 25.5 million.
As reported, the economic effect of NABU and SAPO work in the second half of 2022 made almost UAH 1.9 billion.
