Statement by NABU and SAPO following the meeting at the Office of the President
The recently adopted legislative amendments significantly undermine the independence of NABU and SAPO. This was emphasised by the heads of both institutions during a meeting initiated by the Office of the President.
As a result of these changes, NABU and SAPO are now deprived of the guarantees that had previously enabled them to carry out their mandate to combat high-level corruption. To restore their full and independent functioning, clear and unambiguous legislative action is needed to reinstate the guarantees revoked by Parliament.
At the same time, NABU and SAPO reaffirm their commitment to serving the interests of the Ukrainian people and continue their efforts to preserve both institutions’ capacity and the results achieved throughout years of work.
The rule of law remains a core value for NABU and SAPO. We expect the same commitment from other law enforcement agencies.
We sincerely thank the citizens of Ukraine for their principled stance and active support. It is thanks to their civic engagement that anti-corruption reform in Ukraine became possible.
NABU and SAPO also call on international partners to continue their comprehensive support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. The strength and resilience of Ukraine’s Defence Forces, the unity of Ukrainian society, and sustained international backing are essential to defeating the aggressor and securing a European future for our country.
