Former PrivatBank top managers notified of suspicion
On February 22, 2021, the NABU Detectives and SAPO Prosecutors notified three PJSC CB "PrivatBank" ex-officials of suspicion of embezzling over UAH 136.89 million. The notices of suspicion were signed by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
The suspects are:
- the ex-PrivatBank chairman (Part 5 Article 191, Part 1 and Part 2 Article 366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine);
- the ex-PrivatBank deputy chairman (Part 5 Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine);
- the former head of one of the bank's departments, who simultaneously held the position of the first deputy chairman of the board at an affiliated insurance company (Part 5 Article 191, Part 1 and Part 2 Article 366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The NABU Detectives established that in December 2016, the day before PrivatBank was declared insolvent, the suspects, using fake documents, transferred more than UAH 136.89 million in favor of an insurance company related to PrivatBank's ultimate beneficiaries.
On February 22, 2021, according to intelligence information, the ex-PrivatBank first deputy chairman tried to leave Ukraine for Vienna on a private jet, having departed from Dnipro. By the efforts of the head of the group of Detectives and the NABU Director, who addressed the State Aviation Service the plane was forced to land at Boryspil airport, where the ex-official was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
The ex-PrivatBank chairman and the former head of a bank's department were notified of suspicion (Article 135, Article 278 of the CPC of Ukraine) via mail, as their location was unknown.
The court will shortly apply a preventive measure to the detained ex-official. Investigative actions are underway.
This episode is one of those investigated by the NABU Detectives since the fall of 2019 after all the PrivatBank proceedings came within the Bureau's jurisdiction.
UPD: On February 25, the High Anti-Corruption Court granted the motion of NABU and SAPO and remanded the former PrivatBank first deputy chairman in custody with the option of a UAH 52,210 million (approx. 1.86$ million) bail.
The full amount of bail was posted on the same date.
According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered not-guilty in the commission of a crime and cannot be subject to criminal punishment until he or she is found guilty by court.
