Consolidation of efforts with Ukrainian and international colleagues is crucial in curbing illegal financial flows - Artem Sytnyk
In seven years of work, NABU has sent more than 1,000 international legal orders to 80 states. Meanwhile, without cooperation with law enforcement agencies within and outside the country, any investigation is doomed. This was stated by NABU Director Artem Sytnyk at the International Forum on Kleptocracy and Illicit Financial Flows, which is taking place in Kyiv on Dec. 1-2, 2021.
"Almost every investigation involving large amounts and financial flows makes us send international orders. And we have to turn to other countries for cooperation. In just one case of an MP-led crime organization, we sent 56 inquiries to 8 countries. Thanks to proper cooperation with international colleagues, the case went to court," the Director of NABU stressed.
Artem Sytnyk called on Ukrainian and international colleagues to effectively use the forum to discuss pressing issues and join in communication in order to effectively combat corruption crimes.
"In recent years, Ukraine has shown how much it is trying to fight corruption through the implementation of anti-corruption reforms and the establishment of new anti-corruption bodies, which is the highest priority in the work of the Prosecutor General's Office," Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova said.
The forum was attended by EU Prosecutor General Laura Koveshi, who expressed support for anti-corruption bodies in Ukraine and stressed the importance of fighting corruption in the world. "Ignoring corruption undermines the public's trust. Corruption is a deadly threat to the rule of law and democracy," said Laura Kövesi.
The participants of the event were also addressed by Chargé d'Affaires of the United States in Ukraine Christia Quinn. "We are strong when we work together, so it is extremely important to work to establish proper cooperation. In order to fight corruption on a global scale, it is necessary to ensure the most effective cooperation at the international level. This is the only way to overcome kleptocracy and illegal financial flows, as they undermine the development of the state," the diplomat said.
