NABU gains U.S. law enforcement experiences in preventing offences among employees

For improving the work of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), the Detectives of the Internal Control Department (ICD) learned the best practices of internal control and holding law enforcement officers responsible during the professional exchange program "Best Practice in Internal Review in Law Enforcement" in the United States of America.

The participants visited 5 cities, met with federal officials, representatives of the prosecutors’ office, police, educational institutions and training centers, learned about the experience in cooperation with whistleblowers and interacting with other government agencies, studied the role of the public in combating corruption in law enforcement agencies.

“In the USA, the level of public trust in law enforcement is very high. First, it is provided by strict selection and constant improvement of professional skills of employees. High ethical standards and effective internal investigative procedures also play an important role in ensuring the integrity of law enforcement”, the senior Detective, Head of the ICD Unit, Ruslan said.

The program took place in February 2020 and it is a part of the International Visitor Leadership Program, managed by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Culture Affairs and supported by the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. The Ukrainian delegation included representatives of NABU, the National Police and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

It should reminded, that in the beginning of 2019 the National Bureau successfully passed an audit of the internal system of management of anti-corruption measures and received a certificate confirming the requirements of ISO 37001: 2016 standard.
