NABU told the UN Member States about the results of its work

The analysis of electronic declarations of top officials is one of the key mechanisms of the detection of corruption. That what Oleksandr Skomarov, the Head of one of the Detectives Units of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), had said at the 15th annual session of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in Vienna (the Republic of Austria) on January 22-24, 2019.

"The implementation of criminal liability for illegal enrichment and submission of false data to e-declaration is an effective tool that allows us to detect cases of latent systematic corruption," said Oleksandr Skomarov.

The NABU representative also spoke on the results of the NABU’s activities. According to him, the NABU Detectives currently investigate more than 600 criminal proceedings, 150 persons were given notices of suspicion.

In addition, the discussions on the implementation of the provisions of the UN Convention against Corruption, the issues of education as means of preventing corruption, declaring assets and resolving conflicts of interest, as well as international cooperation and the return of assets derived from corruption and other crimes were held.

According to the results of the conference, representatives of the international community took a resolution, in which they expressed readiness to continue joint work for the further implementation of the UN Convention against Corruption.

The International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities organized the session. The representatives from almost 70 states took part in the conference.

The UN Convention against Corruption is a multilateral treaty negotiated by member states of the United Nations. The far-sighted approach to discussion and the binding nature of many provisions make it a unique tool for developing a comprehensive response to the global problem of corruption. The convention was open for signature on October 31, 2003, in Merida (Mexico).
